Sun Belt Conference Preseason Countdown 2014 # 5

Sun Belt Conference Preseason Countdown 2014

Taken entirely from the Survey to rank the SBC with 106 responses here is the order predicted by the voters.  Starting with the team voted to finish # 11 and ending with the #1 team.  I would like to thank all those that took part in the survey and the outstanding response we received. Using the surveys predicted finish we turned your voted order into a prediction of how each team may fair against schools on their schedule.  We looked at past history, home field advantage(s) and tried to correlate the predicted order with a win/loss projection. We hope this stimulates some conversation and good luck to everyone in SBC in 2014.  The countdown starts today June 9 and will run till we reveal the #1 team as predicted by the survey on June 17, 2014.  We will also reveal all the stats from the survey on June 17, as well.  Again thanks and enjoy.

Texas State Football Acion

Texas State (6-6) SBC, Dennis Franchione 10-14 (.417) enters his 4th year at the helm of the Bobcats.  They play in the 30,000 seat Bobcat Stadium.  In 2012, Texas State began playing full-time FBS football and performed admirably that first year (4-8)    in 2013 the offense proved they were ready to compete at the FBS level.    Freshman Quarterback Tyler Jones allowed us to see glimpses of smart and effective playing, but he must be more consistent especially with accuracy.  With the return of a trio of running backs (Robert Lowe, Chris Nutall, and Terrence Franks) all three proved worthy of a lot of carries.  Last year Coach Franchione decided to run and run early and often, if the QB position can find consistency Texas State has all but two receivers returning, and two – three-star redshirt freshmen will be anxious to make an impression the moment they hit the field.   It’s not difficult to look into the crystal ball and see exciting football is on the horizon for th Bobcats.  The QB position, regardless of who leads will need to be singing from the same hymnal page to make it all happen.   Last year the defense was far behind its counterparts on the field. If the Bobcats improve on the defensive side the Bobcats could have an impact on the upper half of the Sun Belt hierarchy.   Texas State only returns 11 starters from last year’s team, but they have redshirts and the *4th best recruiting class in the SBC ready to compete as Bobcats.

Texas State is in the middle of a construction project, they started with a good foundation and we will now see how high they will go.

Louisiana Monroe Football logo  Louisiana Monroe football action

Louisiana Monroe (6-6) SBC, Todd Berry will be heading into his 4th year, 17–19 (.472) the Warhawks play in the 30,427 seat Malone Stadium.  Louisiana Monroe has an all time record of 284–372–8 (.434) beginning with their inaugural season in 1931.  In 2014 the Warhawks will have one of the more explosive group of running backs in the Sun Belt return – Centarius Donald, GeVontae McNeal and Nathan Meadors, Jr. Returning also is four of the five receivers with experience and playmaking ability to make the big catches, Rashon Ceaser, Kenzee Jackson, Ajalen Holly and Cortney Davis. During Kolton Browning’s four years he threw for 10,264 yards and 81 touchdowns, rushed for 1,545 yards and had 18 TD’s.  The unknown that remains to be seen is who will step in as QB to lead them in 2014.

On the defense side historically it has been a strength of Barry’s teams.  The first couple seasons his Warhawks ranked 59th in 2010 and 74th in 2011.  The good news is the top five tacklers will return on the line, as will four of five linebackers and nine of 11 in the secondary.  Experience will be a strength for the team in 2014. Baring any major injuries the defense this year should be one of the team’s best in years.  At this point much will rest on filling a few holes that graduation created, including who will lead the team on the field as QB.

Introducing # 7

Georgia Southern Football logo  Georgia Southern Football action

7. Georgia Southern (7-4) SBC, Willie Fritz enters his 1st year with what will be a year of many first.  He will guide the Eagles not only into a new conference in 2014 but will lead them into a new era as they enter their last year of transition into FBS. During a very illustrious history under Erk Russell, Paul Johnson, and Monken they combined to win five FCS national titles and reach the FCS semis an additional five times.  The Eagle’s started football in 1924 and have a 275–101–1 (.731) overall record.  With a new coach and new system one of many pluses for Georgia Southern will be the return of dual-threat quarterback sophomore Kevin Ellison.  Ellison split his time with McKinnon in 2013 and with many unknowns from the new staff it will allow options that could be a big benefit for a new system.   They have seasoned skill-position players with three two-year starters on the offensive line, some former three-star recruits on defense, and have experience in the secondary and possibly the conference’s best recruiting class.

With the loss of head coach Jeff Monken to Army, replacing him with head coach Willie Fritz, Georgia Southern will be forced to learn a relatively new offense and will need to replace its best playmaker at both linebacker – Kyle Oehlbeck and cornerback – Lavelle Westbrooks.

Georgia Southern plays in the 24,300 seat Paulson Stadium. With a recruiting class that lead the Sun Belt as the top for 2014 the Eagles are looking to write a future that will parallel their past.  2014 is only one step on their new path, but as always the Eagles are prepared to soar again.

Introducing # 8

Appalachian State (4-8) SBC, Scott Satterfield 4-8 (.333) will be heading into his 2nd year as head coach and is looking for great things as a future SBC member. The Mountaineers won 3 straight FCS titles between 2005-07 and are looking to make waves as they hit the ground running. The Mountaineers play in the 24,040 seat Kidd Brewer Stadium that almost always swells to over 28,000 in attendance. The Mountaineers recorded winning seasons every year from 1994-2012. But now starts a new area and fortunately for Appalachian state starting QB Kam Bryant who set a school record with a 71 percent completion rate as a sophomore and threw just four picks in 333 pass attempts is back. Marcus Cox who averaged better than five yards per carry as a freshman will also be counted on heavily. Appalachian State has a balanced attack with a 50-50 balance between the run and pass. Appalachian State’s backfield will be stronger and more experienced and the Mountaineers should have depth at many positions especially with a large number of returning starters and redshirts now available for 2014. The Mountaineers also bring in reasonably well-touted freshmen at both quarterback (JP Caruso) and running back (Josh Boyd), and the Mountaineers seem pretty excited about many incoming Freshman recruits at each position.

On the defensive side of the ball they still have one area of concern and it may linger over from 2013. The pass rush was disappointing and was only able to bring down the opposing quarterbacks just eight times while staring down 303 pass attempts. It will be an exciting year and the fans nervously look toward to a future that will mirror the past.

Introducing # 9

New Mxico State Football logo  New Mexico State football action

  1. New Mexico State (2-10) SBC, Doug Martin  2-10 (.167) is looking to build the program back from scratch.  Martin is heading into his 2nd year to guide New Mexico State into a  more prosperous future.   Defense is one of the major areas of concern as last year the Aggies ranked 119th out of 125 programs in 2013. New Mexico State plays in the 30,343 seat Aggie Memorial Stadium.

On the offensive side of the ball one of the first goals will be to replace starting quarterback Andrew McDonald.  Coach Martin identified the need for his 2014 recruiting class and absolutely loaded up on the areas needed. Of his 25 signees, 16 were target recruits, quarterbacks-(six), linebackers- (six) or defensive linemen -(four).  Along with the incoming freshman Martin is also bringing in 2014 signees from the Junior college ranks.  The incoming freshmen class the most highly touted appears to be Nick Jeanty and Nate Grimm.   With 2013  leading rusher Germi Morrison and four-year starting tackle Davonte gone the new recruits will have the opportunity to play early. There is still experience on the line, even though both Morrison and Franklin are gone the coaches will need to fill holes that were left due to graduation.  With such a thin crop of returning starters injuries could be a major concern because of the general absence of depth.  However if they stay healthy there will be improvement and it could translate into more wins in 2014.

Introducing # 10

Georgia State Football logo

Georgia State Football action

10. Georgia State (0-12) SBC, Trent Miles will be heading into his 2nd year as the Panthers headman.  GSU plays in the plush confines of the Georgia Dome. There is definitely nowhere to go but up after a 0-12 first year in the SBC.  But up is where they are headed.  Georgia State saw promise in the last 4 games of the year and played UL-Lafayette within seven points of victory and Louisiana Lafayette was the eventual conference champion.   They also showed signs of improvement against Arkansas State when they played them toe to toe midway through the fourth quarter and came up a two-point conversion short of victory.    Quarterback Ronnie Bell went through a normal evolution of improvement as a sophomore starter, but his development was as responsible as anything for GSU’s late-season bright spots.  Sophomore Robert Davis will be back and after a — 48 percent catch rate, 16.2 yards per catch in 2013, this year looks promising.  There are also two tight ends the panthers can look to for development, Keith Rucker and Avery Sweeting showed signs of explosiveness at times in 2013 this year they could be major contributors. Coach Miles has brought in three interesting freshmen as well as a brand new receiving corps for Bell to have as future targets.  That is, if Bell keeps the job.   Bell may have competition from two JUCO transfers, Clay Chastain (in school last year) and Nick Arbuckle (a new signee), to remain the starter.  Unfortunately the line lost five players with starting experience, four of whom started for at least a year. Two-year starting center Tim Wynn is back,   Miles is bringing in major reinforcements with three junior college transfers.   Another area of concern could be the secondary which saw major losses by graduation.  There are question marks but overall improvement could lead to better results and an improved overall record for 2014.

Introducing # 11

Idaho Football logo  Idaho Football Action

11.  Idaho (1-11) SBC, Prediction (2-10), Paul Petrino 1-11 (.091) returns for his second year as the Vandals head coach.  Even though the record didn’t indicate the results they hoped for there were many bright spots in the 2013 season.  The simple fact this year’s team will be more experienced and overall a better football team.  The Temple win proved to the players and staff that hard work will pay off.  Idaho plays in the 16,000 seat Kibbie Dome.  The Vandals have found a new home after playing in 7 conferences during their 121 year history.  With an overall record of 443–568–26 (.440) Idaho will be making a return trip to the Sun Belt (1st – 2000-2004) they will be competing as a football only member this year.  2014 will indeed be an interesting year for the Vandals as Coach Petrino has created a grand experiment.  The vandals will add 24 to the class of 2014, eight who are high school seniors and 16 will be junior college transfers, seven of whom signed in December and are already on campus.  This could change the fortunes of a program looking to make a statement in their 1st year.
