01). UCF (12-1) Prediction (10-2), George O’Leary is heading into his 11th year 72–56 (.563).  The Knights play in the 45,000 seat Bright House Networks Stadium.  The program started in 1979 and last year was a historic one for the UCF Knights.  UCF has played in six bowl games in its history – including last year’s BCS Bowl – and owns a 3–3 record in those games. UCF has been bowl eligible for six of the past nine seasons, after earning its first bowl game in 2005.  The fact is there was never a bigger stage than the Fiesta Bowl and the win over Baylor 52-42 and finishing the year ranked 15th nationally moved the program up the food chain..  This year the Knights will be without Blake Bortles, however the Knights are still the best in the AAC. George O’Leary has built the fastest, deepest program in the conference.  They will start at the top of the mountain and until someone knocks them off that is where they will stay.  UCF has to replace a quarterback, and they have a few options. Sophomore Justin Holman will probably get the nod, he was the first-stringer at the end of spring ball, but he didn’t dominate, and O’Leary didn’t officially name him the starter. Two other options for Quarterback are redshirt freshman Pete DiNovo and true freshman Tyler Harris. They will also need to replace a 1,100-yard rusher, three all-conference offensive linemen, and a strong defensive tackle. The first two games of the season will set the tone for 2014.  With a trip to Dublin, Ireland to play Penn state followed by a game with Missouri in Columbia, MO., we will quickly have an indication of the talent the team has, or not.

02).  ECU (10-4) Prediction (8-4) Heading into his 5th year at ECU Ruffin McNeil has lead his Alma Mater with a (29-22) record.  McNeil will look to his Senior Quarterback to carry them into a new conference, the AAC and improving on last year’s stellar season.  This year as last year the Pirates will be lead of the field with future NFL prospect Shane Carden. Along with Carden ECU has quite a few stars — returning, receivers Justin Hardy and Isaiah Jones, end Terrell Stanley, OLB/missile Montese Overton, but the depth of experience on the offensive line and in the back eight of the defense has moved on.   The Pirates play in the 50,000 seat Dowdy Ficklen Stadium.  In 72 years they have compiled an all time record of 415–379–12 (.522).  Last year’s success will be hard to duplicate with victories against OOC foes NC State and UNC.  This year’s slate of OOC opponents will challenge the Pirates early.  With a recruiting class that comes in 6th out of the AAC and only 9 starters returning this may be a challenging year for the Pirates.

03). Cincinnati (9 – 4) Prediction (9-3) Head coach Tommy Tuberville will be heading into his 2nd year, 9–4.  The Bearcats play in the 35,000 seat Nippert Stadium.  After a successful 2013 season the bearcats head into 2014 with higher expectations.  They dodged a bullet last year not having UCF on the schedule; unfortunately they lost to USF who recorded the only win in 2013 against the Bearcats.  The nice part about college football is they will hope to revenge that loss. Cincinnati will be the last team to hit the gridiron in 2014 with two open weeks to start the season.  When they kick off in Paul Brown Stadium on Sept. 12, fans, team and coaches will be ready for a big year.  This year, as last they dodge UCF and face the other 9 conference foes. With OOC opponents Ohio State, followed by the Miami (FL) Hurricanes they will be tested early and will send them into conference play.  It may be difficult to see where they stack in conference play until they face ECU.  With only 13 starters returning, experience may be a question mark.  However, with the 3rd highest ranked incoming 2014 class in the AAC they may be able to reload and hit the ground running.

04). Houston (8 – 5) Prediction (9-3) Tony Levine will be heading into his 3rd year as head coach with a 14–11  (.560) record.  The Cougars will open the new 40,000 seat Houston Stadium on the water as the reveal one of the more unique stadiums in college football.  Houston will be entering their 58th year with an all time record of 396–345–15 (.534).  Last year Houston came out of the gate on fire winning the first five games in 2013.   Then they stumbled against BYU and lost to the top teams in the AAC (UCF, Louisville and Cincinnati.  The Cougars will need to do well in conference because they have a weak OOC schedule.

#06 USF (2-10), The Bulls play in the 66,000 seat Raymond James Stadium. They have been in 6 bowl games and have a postseason bowl record of (4-2). Wllie Taggart will be the third head football coach in USF football history. The 2014 campaign can go nowhere but up after a very disappointing (2-10) record in 2013. The 2014 recruiting class is listed as the best in the AAC for 2014 and even though it is not clear how many will contribute in 2014 things look promising with the 48th rank team in the country with 14 returning starters. This year will be much improved and may bring them back to a bowl appearance after a two year absence.

#07  SMU (5-7), Head Coach, June Joes will lead the Mustangs for a 7th year – (45 -10).  The SMU football team plays in the 32,000 seat Gerald J Ford Stadium.  A win is a win is a win.  SMU squeaked out 5 in 2013 against FCS opponent Montana State (31-30), and rounded out the 2013 campaign with wins against Memphis, Temple, Connecticut and USF.  Unfortunately the schedule in 2014 is not SMU’s friend.  With OOC games against Baylor, Texas A&M, TCU and North Texas the season has too many challenges for an SMU team that needs to add skill players and more talent at every level.  The Mustangs could start 0-7 before they even have a chance to hit the ground running.

#08 Tulsa (3-9), Head coach Bill Blankenship will be heading into his 3rd year at the helm posting a two year record of 19–8  (.704).  The Golden Hurricanes call the 30,000 seat Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium home. Tulsa sports an all time record of 597–453–27 (.567). Last year’s opening game loss at Bowling Green (34-7) may have set the stage for what the future would hold for the Golden Hurricanes in 2013.  The season ended as it started with a disappointing loss to North Texas at home (42-10).  If Tulsa has a bright spot this year, it is the fact they rank 13th in the nation with 16 returning starters.   An important conference game in the middle of the schedule will be the USF game.  If they can pull out a home win here it may give them momentum to finish a brutal marathon   schedule to the finish.  It is possible they could see 2014 end with a five game skid. The fans could see improvement but, it may be a mirror image of last year.

Memphis is ranked 6th in the Nation with returning starters for 2014.   Memphis beat up on the UT Martin Skyhawks (Won 23-10), the Arkansas State Red Wolves (31-10) and their only conference win was against the USF Bulls (23-10).  Improvement could be in the cards.

RECAP AAC RANK

10)   UCONN 2015 ((3-9) Prediction (2-10)

11). Temple 2014 (2-10)Prediction (1-11)

#10 UConn (3-9), new head coach Bob Duiaco former Notre Dame defensive coordinator comes to UCONN with a multitude of experience and everyone thinks the program will see a fast turnaround.  However the path to improvement may still be a year away.  Fans have high hopes and anticipate the impact Duiaco can have on the program.  UCONN plays in the 40,000 seat Rentschler Field, the all time record is494-526-39 (485).  The 2014 recruiting class was rank last out of the 11 members of the AAC.  Next year with Duiaco at the helm they should see a vast improvement.  The 2014 schedule will be a daunting task, Huskie fans can look to a much brighter future.
