Lets talk some baseball.  The 2014 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament will begin on Friday, May 30, 2014.   The 64 team double elimination tournament will conclude with the 2014 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska  starting on June 14 and ending on June 25.

The 64 teams participating in the NCAA Division I tournament were selected from a pool of 298 eligible teams.  Thirty-one teams were awarded an automatic bid as champions of their conferences, and 33 teams were selected at-large by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.

Teams will be divided into sixteen regions of four teams, which will conduct the double-elimination tournament. Regional champions will then face each other in Super Regionals, a best of three game series to determine the eight participants of the College World Series.

ODU, was an at large selection of the 2014 committee.  Old Dominion will be entering the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 14 years. ODU  will face Maryland in the 1st round, a member of the ACC conference,  The ACC has historically sent 5, 6, 7 and even 8 teams to the tournament year after year.  Well, this is Maryland’s return trip after 42 years of not being selected.      Knock it out of the park Monarchs!

Friday – Monarchs vs Tortoises on the Baseball Diamond

                                Image    Image

Well, it’s a done deal for the first time in 14 years Old Dominion returns to the NCAA baseball tournament.     Proud as a peacock head coach Chris Finwood, with his slight southern drawl, acknowledge his appreciation to the crowd as a nervous and anxious crowd gather at University Pizza on Monday in Norfolk.   When ODU’s name was finally announce by  ESPN  and displayed on the selection show the crowd erupted as if we had just made it to the World Series.  Well, in all honesty it is our World Series.   Yes, baby the Monarchs are looking to represent ODU and a very competitive CUSA baseball membership.   Rice the automatic qualifier is the only other Conference USA representative.  Our goal Friday is to race past the tortoises into the next round of 32.       Go get’em Old Dominion, knock it out of the ballpark.

I have bracket information and game times as well as TV listings below.

Must Win Weekend for ODU Baseball

 Image  Image

The Old Dominion baseball team wraps up its regular season at the Bud this weekend, starting today (6:05 pm).  Long Island comes to Norfolk with a 24-23-1 record and a few nice wins over Illinois State, Yale and North Dakota State and played the Pioneer league leader Bucknell to a tie.  ODU will wrap up the 3 game series on Saturday May 17 with a double header (1:05 & 4:00 pm).  The team has played very well this year and strived for what will come next.  The CUSA tournament starts Wednesday May 21 at Southern Mississippi and the winner of the Tournament will be crowned on Sunday May 24.

ODU has its own fate in its hands, a must win weekend with LIU followed by a good showing in the tournament should get Old Dominion an invite to the NCAA Baseball 64 team playoff.  At the present time there are several perditions out for the field of 64.  The most recent projected field of 64 from Perfect Game has Old Dominion, Long Beach State, San Diego State and Dallas Baptist as he last four teams in for the  postseason field, while Tennessee, Illinois, San Diego and UAB are the first four teams out.. The bracket set forth by PG has Old Dominion going head to head with UCF in GAINESVILLE, Fla.

Bids by conference: SEC (10), ACC (8), Big 12 (6), Pac-12 (4), Missouri Valley (3), American Athletic (3), Big West (3), Mountain West (3), Big Ten (2), Conference USA (3-2). They have Rice CUSA auto, UAB presently in and ODU as potentially as one of the last 4 in.

31 Auto qualifiers only leaves 33 at large bids available and this year has been especially competitive.

ODU Takes Down the Wahooo’s! First ever win over #1 ranked Baseball team

ODU Takes Down the Wahooo’s!

First ever win over #1 ranked Baseball team

Old Dominion University Baseball team (27-18) Whooped #1 UVA on a drizzly and cool night at the beautiful Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk.  With the support of a huge contingent of Monarch faithful (2,937), everyone settled in for a night of baseball 757 style.   When sophomore Connor Myers knocked in three runs and freshman Nick Walker drove home two while four pitchers scattered four hits the Monarchs were on their way to victory.  The outcome of defeating No. 1 Virginia, 8-1 Tuesday night never seemed to be in question

The win was the Monarchs first ever over a number one ranked team (ODU beat second ranked North Carolina, 8-6 in 2008). The Cavaliers fall to 37-9.

Virginia’s 1-0 start had a hopeful night to the same cool response as the weather.  However    the Monarchs scored two in the third when Ben Slaton and Nick Walker scored on a Virginia error.

In the sixth, Josh Eldridge tripled down the right field line to score Taylor Ostrich, then Connor Myers followed with a single to bring home Eldridge for a 4-1 ODU lead.

In the eighth, ODU broke the game open with four runs. Connor Myers doubled home Josh Eldridge and Taylor Ostrich, and then Nick Walker doubled home Tyler Urps and Myers for an 8-1 lead.

ODU senior right-hander Brett Harris (1-1) pitched the first five innings for the win, allowing three hits, one walk and one strikeout. Dean Ali, Conner Overton and Brad Gero finished the game in relief, allowing just one hit.

The Monarchs return to action this weekend with a three-game C-USA series against Florida Atlantic beginning Friday night at 6 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.  The remaining schedule results will play into the consideration of a Monarch bid to play in the Collage Baseball World Series.
