Today, Saturday  May 31, 2014 we will reveal # 6 in the TOP 25 G5 FBS programs projected for the 2014 Football season.  Each day starting at the bottom #25 we will give an introduction about each team until we get to #1.

The Gridirons Great G5’s of 2014 (TOP 25) Introducing # 6

6).   Cincinnati (9 – 4) AAC,Head coach Tommy Tuberville will be heading into his 2nd year, 9–4.  The Bearcats play in the 35,000 seat Nippert Stadium.  After a successful 2013 season the bearcats head into 2014 with higher expectations.  They dodged a bullet last year not having UCF on the schedule; unfortunately they lost to USF who recorded the only win in 2013 against the Bearcats.  The nice part about college football is they will hope to revenge that loss. Cincinnati will be the last team to hit the gridiron in 2014 with two open weeks to start the season.  When they kick off in Paul Brown Stadium on Sept. 12, fans, team and coaches will be ready for a big year.  This year, as last they dodge UCF and face the other 9 conference foes. With OOC opponents Ohio State, followed by the Miami (FL) Hurricanes they will test them early and send them into conference play.  It will be difficult to see where they stack up in conference play until they face ECU.  With only 13 starters returning, experience may be a question mark.  However, with the 3rd highest ranked incoming 2014 class in the AAC they may be able to reload and hit the ground running.

MAC EAST Preseason Backwards Countdown 2014 # 2

MAC EAST Preseason Backwards Countdown 2014

Starting Monday May 26 – June 7 we will attempt to rank the teams in the Mid American Conference.  On June 7th we will reveal the projected finish from top to bottom 1-13

  • Comparison of our original 6 voters (5/9/14) compared to the new poll with 17 people (5/25/14)
  • Our original 6 voters the outcome was remarkably different than when we added an additional 11 posters that shared votes from the MAC board members (additional votes from 5/24 and 5/25).  After tabulating the results and without disclosing the difference in the two polls you will be surprised with the outcome (6/7/14).  Hope everyone enjoys the poll and  gets pumped to battle on the field in August.   So we start the backwards Countdown for the 2014 Preseason ranking with the East.

# 2 Ohio U (7-6) 2014 E (2) Prediction (8-4)

# 3 Buffalo (8-5) 2014 E (3) Prediction (9-3)

# 4 Kent State (4-8)  E (4) Prediction (5-7)

Introducing # 2

# 2 Ohio U (7-6) MAC, 2014 Prediction (8-4), Frank Solich will be heading into his 11th season leading the Bobcats, 66–50 (.569).  Ohio U has called the 24,000 seat Peden Stadium home for the last 85 years and have accumulated an all time record of 532–535–48 (.499) in the last 120 years.

Looking to improve on last year’s record of 7-6 the Bobcats will need to improve their running game.  Last year they only averaged 134 yards per game.  The offense may have difficulty hitting the ground running this year with seven starters gone including quarterback Tyler Tettleton and running back Beau Blankenship.   The good news is center Lucas Powell and guard Mike Lucas are two of the team’s best run blockers, and will clear the way for the ground game.  With Donte Foster gone, Landon Smith and Chase Cochran will most likely be the top targets as receivers.  The most likely replacement for Tettleton at QB will be Derrius Vick, who potentially  receives the nod to lead the 2014 Bobcats.

The defense with eight starters expected back including the entire defensive front four will be strong on leadership and talent. The secondary takes a hit with corner Travis Carrie and safety Xavier Hughes moving on, but free safety Josh Kristoff will be one of the team’s top tacklers along with corner Devin Bass as one of the up and coming play makers. Special teams returns Punter Matt Green and kicker Josiah Yazdani.   Ohio U has 11 starters returning – 3 on offense, and 8 on defense.  The 7th best recruiting class in the MAC for 2014 and the Bobcats will be looking for immediate help for the offensive in 2014.

7).   North Texas (9 – 4) CUSA Dan McCarney enters his 4th year, 18–19 (.486).   North Texas plays in the 31,000 seat Apogee Stadium  The Mean Green started playing football in 1913 and have compiled a 487–472–32 (.508) all time record.  Last year North Texas put an exclamation point on the end of their season with the Heart of Dallas Bowl win over UNLV 36-14.    North Texas started 2013 slow but finished with an impressive 9-5 record by winning 8 of their last 9 games including the Bowl win.  North Texas loses their MVP quarterback Derek Thompson a three year starter.  However he will be replaced by either Andrew McNulty (last year’s backup), Dajon Williams (an athletic QB), or junior college transfer Josh Greer, who completed 64 percent of his passes for Navarro College last fall.  The Mean Green was big and physical up front and hard-hitting in the back.   Now they must almost completely rebuild the starting front seven.

One reason for North Texas’ surge last year was an experienced defensive line that got better as the season went on. North Texas had one of the most efficient, defenses in the country last year. The Mean Green logged 79 tackles that constituted a loss of yardage on the play. 39 sacks, 17 forced fumbles and blocked seven kicks.  With only 9 starters returning the big question mark will be how quickly new players will fit in and contribute.

Introducing # 3

Image    Buffalo Football pict

# 3 Buffalo (8-5) 2014 Prediction (9-3),  Jeff Quinn will be entering his 5th year as head coach, 17–32  (.347)  Buffalo plays in the 29,000 seat UB Stadium.  The Bulls started playing football in 1894 and have an all time record of 360–478–28 (.432).  The offense appears to be in good hands with quarterback Joe Licata back for his junior year – he may be one of the best in the MAC in 2014.   One of the team’s biggest strength should be an offensive line with all five starters returning.   Running back Anthone Taylor, will be exciting to watch and will need to fill the shoes of Branden Oliver.  Special Teams has both kickers returning and appears solid.

On the defensive side of the ball the bulls will need to replace one of the best linebackers in college football (Kahlil Mack).  Both ends, Colby Way and Beau Bachtelle are gone, as are three starters in the secondary.  The only returner at corner is Cortney Lester and with Buffalo  only returning a total of 10 starters in 2014, they will need to see some help from new players.    With a very promising crop of 2014 recruits the Bulls will need to see maturing very quickly from some of the new guys.  Buffalo is bringing in the 3rd best recruiting class in the MAC for 2014.  With a very favorable schedule Buffalo should improve on last year’s record.

Branding for new Conference Top 25 Poll (Survey)

What do you think Pict Survey Closed

We need your assistance, please take the survey we value your opinion!

This new poll has been a work in progress. Before we launch the new top 25 poll in August we are asking for your assistance. We are asking members of the boards from the Sun Belt, American, Mid American, Mountain West and Conference USA teams to assist us with the development of this new Poll. Recently we had a meeting with several media outlets in an attempt to have them pick up the poll for national exposure. The meeting was very fruitful and we came away with lots of suggestions and recommendations. The number one comment that surfaced was the name of the poll. Our goal is to brand the poll to achieve positive national attention and exposure. We met with several groups from school administrators, sports information professionals and marketing executives for recommendations.
After digesting the input from those meetings and a few other individuals, we humbly appeal to the loyal and dedicated fans that post on the boards for help. The cumulative collection of knowledge and wisdom that is shared from the five conferences has some of the most knowledgeable fans in the country and I hope everyone will take a moment to send us your opinion! After many hours of deliberation from board representatives, School administrators and a few media sources, we narrowed the selections down to nine. Please take one moment to give us your choice and the one you feel will best represent the five conferences. * Survey ends Saturday June 10, 2014 – 9:00 pm. We will post the survey on all five boards and the ODU Fan Forum. The results will be posted June 10, for a runoff. (The runoff will end June 14, 9:00 pm).

Thanks

Introducing # 4

Image  Image

# 4 Kent State (4-8) 2014 Prediction (5-7),  Paul Haynes, 4–8 (.333) will be entering his 2nd year as head coach of the Golden Flashes.   Kent State has played in the 25,318 seat Dix Stadium for the last 46 years.  The Golden Flashes started playing football in 1920 and have an overall record of 320–499–28 (.394).  On the field they will have RB Trayion Durham back after leading the way with 766 yards and six scores last year. QB Colin Reardon fought through the growing pains of a freshman, and now he has to get the passing game going with Chris Humphrey and TE Casey Pierce two targets that will have an impact three starters are back on the line but losing C Phil Huff and RG Pat McShane is a concern.  SS Luke Wollet is gone along with CB Darius Polk, but the rest of the back seven return including S Jordan Italiano and MLB Matt Dellinger. There’s no replacing longtime starter and star Roosevelt Nix up front, but Nate Terhune returns on the nose. Anthony Melchiori is back after hitting 9-of-14 field goals, and will need to improve, but as a punter he averaged 44.5 yards per kick.  The Golden Flash should see an overall improvement in their record in 2014.

8).   Utah State (9 – 5) MWC – Head coach Matt Wells, 9–5 (.643), has the Aggies headed in the right direction.  Only in his 2nd year at the helm of this stampede of success, Utah is looking to claim the MWC Championship with an Aggie brand (sizzle).   The high flying Utah Aggies have been playing football for 123 years and compiled an all time record of 514–512–31 (.501).  The Aggies play in the 25,513 seat Romney Stadium AKA Merlin Olsen Field and have called it home since being built in 1969 at an elevation of 4,710 feet above sea level.  Utah hopes to improve on what has been an upward ascent over the last three years to perch at the top of the Mountain.  After achieving a three game win streak in the last three bowl appearance (2011, 2012 and 2013) all that is left for the Aggies to do in 2014 is take the bull by the horns.

9)    Toledo (7-5) MAC –  Matt Campbell is currently the second youngest head coach in FBS.  Matt is heading into his 3rd year as the Rockets head coach *(25-9).  Toledo had four consecutive losing seasons from 2006 -2009.  That is all a distant memory as the rockets have gone 25 -9 in the last three years.  For the last 78 years Toledo has called the  26,248 seat glass Bowl home.  If this year’s offense is as explosive on the ground as last year, Toledo could be the surprise team in the MAC and even in the country.  The defense should be terrific with eight returning starters led by a linebacking corps anchored by Junior Sylvestre on the weakside and Chase Murdock in the middle.    QB Logan Woodside has take control of the job this offseason. Alonzo Russell and Dwight Macon lead the receiving corps that has to replace Bernard Reedy.   Four senior starters are back up front, but there are holes that will need to be addressed.  With a favorable home schedule this may prove to be a very rewarding years as the Rockets take flight into higher expectations.  *Tim Bekman, regular season and new head coach Matt Campbell for their bowl game.
